Amy Sherald
Amy Sherald attracted a great deal of interest from institutions and collectors after she painted a portrait of the former First Lady Michelle Obama in 2018 as commissioned by the National Portrait Gallery. Sherald’s distinctive aesthetic makes sparing use of color and frequently combines vibrant tones with greys to depict Black experiences. Her painting of Breonna Taylor, has been dubbed the most significant picture of the twenty-first century by some. The Speed Art Museum in Kentucky and the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C. acquired this painting.
