Dr. Patricia Bath
Patricia Era Bath was an American ophthalmologist, humanitarian, inventor and academic scholar. She invented the laser cataract surgery in 1986. That invention was called Laserphaco Probe. Dr. Bath, developed an interest in science early in her life.
Dr. Patricia Bath, was born on November 4, 1942 in Harlem, New York. Her father Rupert Bath, was a Trinidadian immigrant and the first black motorman in the New York City Subway System. Her mother, Gladys, was a descendant of African slaves and Cherokee Native Americans and worked as a house wife.
Bath was the first Africa American to complete a residency in ophthalmology and the first female doctor to receive a medical patent. Also, she was the first African American to chair this residency program at New York University. She became interested in combating preventable blindness, treatment and cure
for the underserved population. Many scientists hail her impact on eye surgery as one of her greatest achievements.
Bath died on May 30, 2019 from complication of cancer at a University of California San Francisco Medical Center.
